Rachel - Los Angeles, CA

Bsd
Rachel is my (not actually physically related) cousin whom I love dearly, and miss dearly, because she is going to high school in Israel, the land of her soul. I took this picture in June, when she was finishing up her sophomore year at BCHS, my alma mater. I appreciated three elements about this outfit. The color, the coordination, and the (sheesh, I can't think of a word that starts with "c" to complete this sentence. If any readers have any ideas, please comment, and I'll edit accordingly) quirky touches.
The color: This shade of blue is a wonderful complement to Rachel's beautiful blondeness. It makes her skin look creamy and her eyes extra chocolately (ooh, I think I'm craving ice cream.) My point here is it's a great shade for her. The contrast between the dark blue shirt and the tan skirt is crisp and creates a nicely defined look.
The coordination: Take a closer look at Rachel's socks, and you will find the exact elements of her ensemble reflected there. I am a great lover of attention to detail and that definitely extends to footwear. (In fact, in a desperate moment when I was unable to find a pair of socks that matched my outfit, I chose to match my earrings to my socks.)
The (word starting with "c" that will imminently be inserted): The shoes. It's always about the shoes, but even more so in this scenario. Converse generally hold a special place in the portion of my heart devoted to fashion, but these! These! Colored laces - in only one shoe! Personal messages inscribed! Worn with socks and skirt! My affections overwhelm me!
I LOVE YOU, RACHEL!

How about "Converse"?

Dear Cheerio,

I saw your cool line on the top of the blog, about ghetto hip and urban Chic. I searched high and low to see where the asterisk led, but could find nothing. i'm gonna go nuts if I don't find that asterisk's partner. Please help.

What is this, Chabad porn? Pictures of Lubavitch girls? Oy!

e said...

Oh, and non-lubavs are OK? What kind of warped wthic do you have?

Anonymous said...

I merely object to the whoring of Lubavitchers. I don't particularly care if some regular Jane off the street is prostituted, but (former) members of Tzivos Hashem? R"L!

Just like a guy said...

Yeah Cheerio, give that asterisk some meaning in life.

Menucha photography said...

nice new title! what was it before?
I love you rach!

Cheerio said...

E - 1. what about "converse"?
2. for the meaning of the asterisk, look at the bottom of the page.
Anon - this isn't Chabad porn, as all elbows, knees, and collarbones are covered. also, if you're going to be perverted, please demonstrate a measure of equality. there are Lubavitch gentlemen featured on this site as well. we appeal to both male and female and alternative sexual appetites here. (i am from berkeley after all!)
TRS - the asterisk has personal meaning for you... can't you help a brother out and point e to the right place?

There was a fascinating article in this month's Nshei Chabad Newsletter about the girl's magazine "Shoshanim". In it Mrs. Citron explained that a Rav told her that she couldn't have pictures of girls on the front cover, because it's not Tznius. Yes, these girls would of course be wearing burkas (or the Chabad equivalent thereof), but it would still not be acceptable.
In this case as well, Kol Kvudah Bas Melech Pnimia; a Jewish girl, K"VC a Lubavitch girl, should not be exposing herself in this manner. I know that she didn't take this picture, or post it, so the fault obviously lies with the proprietor of this blog.

Just like a guy said...

I know what the asterisk refers to-but does anyone else know? My ego would be greatly soothed if clear mention was made of my obvious genius.
(I'm only [partially] kidding, of course)

Cheerio said...

Anon - i wouldn't call that article "fascinating", but rather, "frightening".
also, no one's exposing themselves. displaying, yes; exposing, no.
TRS - once wasn't enough for you? man, that ego is more wounded than i imagined!

Anonymous said...

Frightening? Why? Sure, I don't get why there has to be two Chabad-run teenage girl magazines (Yaldah and Shoshanim)-after all, the guys seem to get along well enough with only one, but that doesn't make it scary, does it?
And for a Jewish American Princess, any display is exposure.

BTW, the Nshei enlightened me tremendously-for the first time I finally understood why socks are so evil. Being a pure-minded Bochur, I never got this whole tights thing. Turns out that in fact the Alter Rebbe Paskens that they're a must (kind of)! Who knew?

Just like a guy said...

Wounded? Hardly. Desirous of more? Isn't everyone's?

Cheerio said...

TRS- true, true. but mine is now wounded as a result of your comment on your blog.

Anon - cmon, variety is the spice of life!
wait - tights existed in the time of the A"R?
and if you were truly a pure-minded bochur, you still wouldn't understand why socks are evil.
but then, if you were a pure minded bochur, you wouldn't think that any display of jewish women was inappropriate.

Just like a guy said...

Salved?

Cheerio said...

quite.

Cheerio said...

yourself?

Anonymous said...

The Alter Rebbe doesn't hold that you have to wear socks. Rather he holds that the entire leg must be covered: to the knee in full fashion, and from there on down with something; hence the tight.
If I was a pure-minded Bochur I wouldn't understand why socks are evil? Why not? As far as I can tell they're evil because they expose the leg, and perhaps (in schools' minds) because they encourage individuality in dress and allow girls to call attention to themselves.

And I believe you mistyped in that last sentence, yes? You meant to say that a pure-minded Bochur believes that exposure of the female is evil. And yes, I suppose I would concur with this position.

Just like a guy said...

But of course. Meanwhile, I am down on both my knees, begging you to remove the word verification. It is quite the impediment to my sanity.

Cheerio said...

wait - TO the knee, and from thereon DOWN? wow.
and i did not mistype - as a pure minded bochur, A: you wouldn't know that socks can expose the leg, and B: you wouldn't imbue the image of a woman with an inappropriate context because your mind would be PURE.
and if schools think forbidding socks can inhibit the expression of individuality in girls, they have sadly underestimated the creativity of lubavitch teenagers.

Anonymous said...

Did you read the article? I'll have you know that Nshei happens to be the finest Jewish english-language publication in existence, even if it does have a shocking habit of misspelling certain people's (close to my heart) names.

A. It's pretty obvious, know? Pure-minded does not equal blind.
B. The image of a woman is forbidden, regardless of mind association. The Chareidi media does not publish photographs of women; this is not because they are choshed their men to lust after Tzipi Livni and Hilary Clinton, but rather because in our faith, at least in its more fundamental versions, there is a real antipathy to the viewing of any woman who is not a member of one's immediate family. Lubavitch happens to agree with this, which is why you'll find Shmais not posting photos of any women, to name only one example.

And it's not a question of inhibiting expression; they know they've no chance of that. Rather, they try to prevent it as much as possible, feeling that the more ground that is covered (both metaphorically and physically), the better. Remember, the schools are trying to help, not hurt.

e said...

The third "c" is "converse."

Also, an asterisk doesn't say, "Scroll down to the bottom of the page for more info"; it says, "Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for another asterisk for more info." As long as that asterisk doesn't have partner, we shall remain in the dark.

Whoever Anonymous is should know that going around to people's blogs and proving to everyone that you are a opressive, bigoted fool is not impressive to anybody, Not to mention impolite. I suppose though you must be a more "pure" minded indiviual than I. If you would like, there are some people in Afghanistan that I'm sure would definatley agree with you though. I am certain i could get you guys in touch with each other.

Anonymous said...

Oppressive? Bigoted? I think not. Trying to uphold the standards of Israel of old is an endeavor hardly worthy of these epithets.
Tznius is an issue that the Lubavitcher Rebbe fought very hard for, and just because people in Crown Heights dress like whores doesn't mean that they're behavior is commendable.

Anonymous said...

Hey Ashira....so your blog has now become interesting with all this "controversy". Entertaining to say the least. So I have to ask...did you and Ilana come up with this anonymous character who keeps commenting on socks. Is it just to get some more readers? This character is perfect for the sketch comedy I am writing about the hasidic world. He's a creepy, self-proclaimed righteous to holy for thou hypocrit. I can just see it, creepy hasidic jew drooling over girls in long socks while reading up on how the Alter Rebbe Paskins it. Thanks, this gave me such great ideas.

Anonymous said...

Ilana and Ashirah could not hope to come with an anonymous as inventive nor as intelligent as myself. When socks are made an issue of then they shall be addressed, and as this particular forum seems to be devoted to such a discussion, every effort will be made, on my part at least, to uphold the standards for which the Jewish nation was at one time famous.

As for this needless name calling...fighting for the preservation of the religion which I love is hardly worthy of the invective which I've been subjected to. I'm not holier than anyone; I merely wish to point out that certain things are right, and certain things are wrong. If that is a crime, then I hope to have Isiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the rest of the Hebrew prophets by my side in the defendants docket.

Cheerio said...

e - i know i'm being slow on this one, or just lazy, but explain it to me again, in full sentences this time. what's up with the "Converse"?

Anon 2 - indeed, neither ilana or i could conceive of impersonating such a bitter, harsh, and repressed individual. you will have to think the real anonymous for your inspiration.

TRA - thank you for spelling my name correctly.
despite the feelings of charity i have because of that, i vehemently disagree with your methods.
tznius is important. very, very, very important.
but excising the female population from public view isn't really going to help matters.
after all, doesn't even the holy Nshei Newsletter, that inspired your righteous ire in the first place, display pictures of women?
women exist. deal with it.

Nemo said...

Ok, wait, so there's a Lubav teenage boys magazine now?

Anonymous said...

The holy Nshei Newsletter is meant for and designed for women. As it happens, they know that a major part of their audience is male, and therefore all the pictures in there are tasteful (what a nasty word) and Tznius.
Putting a picture of a girl online is fine (maybe). But having a close-up, and writing about it all in laborious detail? Something tells me that the great Rabbis wouldn't approve.
Yes, I know the great Rabbis wouldn't approve of my being online either, or commenting on this issue, et all, but someone has to be a hypocrite, right? And again, if it's any Joe Shmoe, fine, but a Lubavitcher? Shouldn't we (at least pretend to try) be held to a higher standard?

And "women exist. deal with it."? Yup, G-d's first mistake in the world-Eve.

Just like a guy said...

Yes Nemo, it's called Sports Illustrated

You know, misogynists can go to therapy. There is hope for you yet.

Anonymous said...

The first step is acknowledgment of a problem. When that happens I'll get back to you.

Sebastion said...

In that case, we may never hear from you again! Without you, who will perform the honor killings?!

Cheerio said...

Sebastion shoots! He scores!

Anonymous said...

Huh? I'm still available for honor killings...therapy on the other hand...

Cheerio said...

great - that's gonna leave me (in an appropriate feminine role) to clean up the blood! seriously, it wouldn't kill you to clean up after yourselves once in a while!

Ashira...I think its time you put up a new post...o and drive down south and come visit me :) And I would like to be a guest blogger, one word, MELROSE.

Just like a guy said...

What don't you get? Men do the dirty work, women clean up afterwords? Who do you think you are, Susan B. Anthony?

Anonymous said...

hello to all, this is the girl from the picture though all the controversy is quite exciting i have to say mr.anonymous pls do us all a favor and get a life, and all the rest of u guys minus sebastion and menucha who rock on,all the rest of u pls before u leave any comments about tzinus of nshei chabad meditate for 3 days and 3 nights and then we'll talk, btw ashira i love u tons

Anonymous said...

haha so after i read all these comments... Um what the heck is a bochur doing online in the first place? Well there is a reason yeshivas dont allow bochurim online, this all leads back to untznuis pictures. Exactly they do not let bochurim online so they wont look at untznuis pictures and i dont think they are talking about these type of pictures. Unfortunately im coming along a year later to comment on this but i couldnt stop myself my fingers just flew over the keyboard before I could stop them. BTW Rochel I am very sorry I didnt meditate for 3 days - i knw u werent joking about that.

Cheerio said...

anonymous the last - thanks for commenting, albeit a year late. made me return to read through the comments and figure out what you were talking about. it was quite entertaining.
